Set 6 - Quarter 1
In The Case of Cat v. Dog...

Hello from SapphicSavvy!
I hope everyone had a safe weekend! We officially rang in the first quarter of our new Set, and we’re quite excited to report on these results! So without further ado, let’s get started.
We Support You
Our first question this past week asked about how many family members fully supported y’all in your sapphic identity/relationships. We were happy to see that the average was decently high, coming in at just under 5 family members, which would equate to immediate family for many people. However, we know that this is not the case for everyone, and in case you haven’t heard this from your family members, let us say that we support and appreciate y’all so much. You yourself, your loves, and your lives are beautiful and deserve the utmost respect.

We had pretty similar answers across age groups, but an interesting trend in the average guess. Older users had higher average guesses than younger users. This is an interesting perception to unpack, but I think there’s probably 2 main components to it. The first part of this perception could come from a theoretical versus actualized knowledge of family who supports you being sapphic. There may be fewer users in younger age groups who are out to a vast amount of family members, and therefore the perception that there are fewer family members who would support you relies on your best judgement. However, there can be people that surprise you in a good way, and older users who may be out to more of their family may have more opportunities to definitively know if their family is supportive of their identities. The second, and more speculative reason, would be that there unfortunately seems to be a rising wave of homophobia again, burgeoning from the increasingly hateful rhetoric of far-right groups that have been popularized in the past couple of years. Younger users may have siblings or other family members affected and infected by this wave of thinking (or know of other sapphics who this would apply to), and therefore would affect perceptions for how much support they would receive for their identity. It's also possible that people who are not so accepting now will have a change of heart later in life (and this in turn raises the average across age groups). It gets better.

Pretty similar answers across identity groups as well. We’re happy for those of you who do have support and acceptance from your families! If you don’t, it’s okay to mourn that an important aspect of who you are is creating tension with people close to you, and we hope you have other chosen family and friends who you can rely on. If you’re struggling with this though, please check out some LGBTQ+ resources that can get you in touch with further care. You got this!
P*ssy Lover (The Cat! Jeez)
The age-old stereotype of a sapphic and their cats. But how true is it really? How many people prefer cats to dogs? The answer was exactly half of users. I’m serious. 50% of people prefer cats to dogs. The evenness of that split is getting me, how serendipitous.

Little bit of an age effect, with younger users preferring cats slightly more than older users. Cats are just much calmer than dogs, and for young people who may not have as much free time, space, or people around to meet a dog’s needs for stimulation, a cat may be a much better pet to keep around. Maybe I’m biased though, I’m writing this as my cat sleeps very peacefully next to my leg. He’s holding his arms around a fold of blanket. He’s purrfect. :)

Queer users were also a little bit more likely to prefer cats to dogs! This effect was pretty small though, and I think what I said above could still apply here too. I still can’t believe how neat the 50/50 split was. I guess the sapphic with 10 cats stereotype is a little busted!
WNBA Watchers
There were over 70 WNBA games that happened during June. Y’all guessed that users watched 2-3 of those. The actual answer was… 0.61.

Users over 40 were the only group to hit an average over 1. Everyone else rounded down to 0. Listen, I would be snarky about this except I didn’t watch any WNBA games either 😭 I just am not that into basketball idk. It’s very impressive to play at a high level, but I usually go for volleyball or soccer these days. I fear the hype around the Men’s World Cup has pushed me to watch and get into it more, and I really do see the appeal of watching sports, so I guess I have new homework. I’ll prepare before the Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027 🫡

Bisexuals I’m dead. Y’all watched an average of 0.08 WNBA games. The guesses were a little off from the average, but you have the spirit! Lesbians had the highest average, which I suppose is on par for common stereotypes. What sports are we watching that’s not basketball? Are we watching sports? Does Love Island count as a sport?
Vitae Vegan (Or Vegetarian)
Our last question this past quarter asked who has been vegan/vegetarian for at least 1 year. I feel like this is another huge stereotype that people have. Let’s start with the national average (as of like 2019). That was 3% vegetarian or vegan for women in the US. Now for our results:

We had an overall average of 35%, so there might be something to this trend. But we had pretty wild age differences for younger users, of whom only about a quarter reported being vegetarian/vegan for a year. 🤓👆 I have a theory about this. I think this is due to the protein mania that’s been going on for like the past 3 years. Everyone suddenly became really obsessed with how much protein they were eating at all once, and I think this skews towards meat-based protein. Yeah, I know that plant-based protein is a big thing too, but if you’re seriously trying to hit protein goals, you’ll probably need a mix of both kinds to hit that target. Not to get too crazy with it, but I also think this protein-maxxing directly conflicts with food-marketing from the 2000s and 2010s that was all about eating mostly vegetables to lean out, and maybe whichever narrative you’re exposed to in your young adult years is the one that sticks. Idk, call me crazy. I don’t think either narrative is great when taken to extremes, but it’s a plausible reason for the results, no?

Queer users had the highest average, shying just under 50% who have been vegetarian/vegan for at least a year! If y’all have good vegetarian/vegan recipes, please share with us, it’s good to build up a personal cookbook. I had a good run of being functionally vegetarian due to being disgusted with handling raw meat that lasted into my early 20s, and I’m ngl I really liked the recipes I had then, I feel like they’re more creative.
That’s all I have for you today! See you in the app!
